How Hot Electron Generation at the Solid–Liquid Interface Is Different from the Solid–Gas Interface

한국교원대학교 화학교육과 이시우 교수팀이 KAIST 화학과 박정영 교수팀과 함께 고체-액체 계면에서의 핫전자 거동을 실험적으로 최초로 관찰하는 데에 성공을 했다.
 핫전자(hot electron)는 높은 에너지를 가지는 전자로 일반적으로 펨토초(1000조 분의 1) 동안 1~3eV의 에너지를 방출하며, 수명이 굉장히 짧기 때문에 직접적으로 검출하는 데에 어려운 점이 있어 왔다.
 본 연구진은 촉매에서의 표면화학 반응에 의해 여기(excite) 되는 핫전자를 금속-반도체 쇼트키(Schottky) 나노소자를 이용하여 실시간으로 검출하였다.
 이는 금속-반도체 소자에서의 쇼트키 배리어를 이용하는 것인데, 이 퍼텐셜 배리어를 이용하여 높은 에너지를 가지는 전자만을 선택적으로 직접 전류로(chemicurrent) 검출할 수 있었다.
 특히, 기존에는 불가능했었던 액상 반응에서의 핫전자의 이동(hot electron transfer)을 직접 검출하여 기상 반응에서의 결과와 비교를 하는 것에 성공을 했고, 고체-기체 계면에 비해 고체-액체 계면에서 핫전자의 이동이 100배 가량 증가한다는 점을 처음으로 규명하였다
 한국교원대학교 이시우 교수는 “이번 연구성과는 액상 반응에서의 핫전자의 여기가 증폭된다는 점을 실험적으로 직접 밝혀 표면화학 반응에서의 에너지 변환 메커니즘을 규명할 수 있는 데 큰 의의가 있다”고 말했다.
 KAIST 박정영 교수는 “기존에는 불가능에 가까웠던 고체-액체 계면에서의 핫전자 거동 관찰은 표면과학 분야의 큰 진전이며 추후 촉매전자학의 개척을 위한 발판이 될 것이다”라며 “본 결과는 차세대 에너지 소자, 반도체 소자개발 및 핫전자 기반 광전기화학 촉매 등의 응용연구를 가속화할 것이다”라고 말했다
 본 연구결과는 “How Hot Electron Generation at the SolidLiquid Interface Is Different from the SolidGas Interface"으로 2023 3 17일 자로 미국 화학회(American Chemical Society)에서 출판하는 나노 과학 분야에서의 최고 수준 학술지인 Nano Letters에 게재되었으며, 1저자는 한국교원대학교 이시우 교수이며, KAIST 박정영 교수가 교신저자이다.
